TIBBS Industry Skills Series Session 1: Culture of Industry vs Academia

An introduction to the world of business with Don Rose and Nancy Fisher. Nancy Fisher will talk about the similarities and differences between industry and academic culture, drawing on her experiences working in academia as a tenure-track professor, as well as in industry as a consultant and technology manager for BD Technologies. Don Rose will talk about the landscape and anatomy of a company, drawing on his extensive experience in the pharmaceutical and life sciences industry.

TIBBS Industry Skills Series Session 2: Industry Leadership Essentials 

In the first half of session 2 Will Frey, Assistant Manager of Organization & Professional Development at UNC, will describe common leadership styles and how to adapt your style when working with people of varying personality types.  Will is the author of many books including “Ease into Freedom: Keys for Reducing Stress and Unlocking Your Potential (2016)”.

Following Will Frey’s portion Professor Mark McNeilly, Kenan Flagler Business School, will present a workshop titled “Leading in the Middle”.  In it you will learn how to manage up and navigate the political structures common in the corporate workplace.

TIBBS Industry Skills Series Session 3: Getting Your Foot in the Door

A panel of hiring managers and HR representatives will provide important information on the hiring process in industrial careers. Topics of discussion include resume building/advice, application timeline, interviewing advice, negotiation, hiring trends, and tips on how to get your foot in the industry door. Following the panel discussion there will be tables set up for resume review with career development staff and panelists (limited availability, sign ups at the beginning of the panel).

TIBBS Industry Skills Series Session 4: Research Related Careers in Industry

A panel of professionals from a wide-range of research-related careers will discuss a range of topics including potential career paths, the interview process, career preparation, and other important topics. Research related careers represented on the panel will include Business Development, Consulting, Regulatory Affairs, MSLs, and writing careers. The panel discussion will be followed by networking session with hors d’oeuvres.

TIBBS Industry Skills Series Session 5: Research Intensive Careers in Industry

A panel of PhDs who have significant experience in research-intensive fields will discuss characteristics of research-intensive jobs, application processes, preparation for entering the field, and other important issues. Research intensive careers represented on the panel will include R&D at big pharma and small biotech, drug development, CRO, etc.  The panel discussion will be followed by networking session with hors d’oeuvres.
