Session 1A – The many faces of an academic career: Standing out on the academic job market

  • Are you interested in pursuing a tenure-track academic position? Attend the ARIC-sponsored panel on Thursday, September 6th to hear panelists from local institutions discuss what it’s like to be an early-career professor. Panelists will discuss their career paths, milestones/goals of a successful postdoctoral fellowship, best practices for identifying faculty positions, and other hot topics, with plenty of opportunities for questions from the audience.Following the discussion, attendees will have the chance to network with the panelists during a breakout session.

Join us on October 2nd to hear from teaching- and research-focused postdocs in academia, government, and industry at the ARIC Postdoc Panel. Panelists will discuss finding a postdoctoral position, the transition after graduate school, and strategies for a successful postdoc. Highlighted topics will include important achievements to make during the early career stages, how to secure funding, mentor trainees, and adapt your research projects to evolving technologies. Following the panel, breakout sessions will allow you to network one-on-one with the panelists.

Session 3B – From mentee to mentor: Leading a successful scientific team

Attend the ARIC Workshop to learn how to manage a research team on November 8th. This workshop will cover mentorship strategies related to resolving conflicts and providing feedback as well as discussions about power dynamics in the workplace to help you develop skills to foster a dynamic and diverse research team.

Session 1B – Standing out: Skills to shine on the job market for industry, government, and beyond (NEW DATE – RESCHEDULED due to hurricane)

Are you interested in research-intensive careers outside of academia? Would you like a career in government, industry, or non-profits? Not sure how to market yourself or where to start in the application process? Attend the ARIC panel of industry, government and non-profit scientists Thursday, November 15th to answer your questions. The event will include an introduction to marketing yourself and how to format a CV/resume for your career track of choice followed by a panel of representatives from each career track. After the panel there will be a structured networking session with the panelists.

Tracey Baas, the Executive Director for Broadening Experiences in Scientific Training at the University of Rochester, will lead her workshop on informational interviews. She will cover how to find people to interview, conducting the informational interview, and then challenge you to contact people.
