2017 Science Policy Series
TIBBS and Science Policy Advocacy Group (SPAG) are partnering to present a training series for Science Policy. Speakers’ experiences span the breadth of the field of Science Policy, and talks will be accompanied by workshops and exercises intended to ensure that students who participate become familiar with the skills and resources that they will need to seek careers in the broad spectrum of Science Policy. Eligible participants can earn a Science Policy Certificate (Basic or Advanced), and will also have the opportunity to gain distinction with a selection of awards with the opportunity to to win travel awards so that they can try their new skills in a real-world setting.
Seminar topics will include: Introduction to Science Policy & the Science Policy Series; Civics 101 and the Federal R&D Budget; Communicating Science in Politicized Environments; Science Policy in Non-Profit Organizations; Policy Panel & Science Policy Breakout Session: Science Policy in Scientific Societies; and The Future of Science Policy.
Workshops topics will include: Communicating with Congress & Writing a White Paper and How to Write a Blog Post.

The series will run throughout the fall semester, kicking off with a preview on August 31st the first official series session, September 12th through December 4th. We hope you can join us! Curious about science policy and related careers but don’t know where to start? Dr. John Hardin will introduce science policy as a career path for STEM graduates and differentiate ‘policy for science’ and ‘science for policy’. In addition, he will provide examples of current topics relevant to science policy including federal funding for research and development, gene editing technologies, the opioid epidemic, and others.
