Dr. Johnson discussed how undergraduate laboratory classes are often in a “cookbook” format in which students perform an experiment where the hypothesis, procedure, and sometimes even the expected results are given to them. This makes the lab boring and gives students an unrealistic impression of true scientific research. Instead, he promotes an inquiry-based approach, in which you, the instructor, can take a traditional “cookbook” lab and re-formulate it to get the students asking questions and making conclusions from the data they generate.
